You can run re-encodes through GPU but the results, in terms of permanent files for your library, are not all that great. GPU acceleration is MUCH faster, but at the expense of both quality and file size. My re-encoding in an attempt to have my permanent library files smaller was done entirely through CPU, which is what you want to use for quality retention when re-encoding. My thing is that I would like to build a nice home theater, but I don't want to go to the trouble of doing that if I'm going to be stuck with lossy streams. I'm not against reading and doing my own research here, but there is so much to learn that I am kind of at a loss on where to begin.įeel free to recommend that I stick to a disc collection.

Is there particular streaming hardware or AVRs that are must-haves? I currently use an Apple TV 4k at home, but I know the Nvidia Shield is a go-to recommendation.

Is it possible to achieve this with currently available hardware?Īre such high-quality files widely available where people may go to obtain their movie files? Is there an optimal set of options I can use to encode the files that I store to achieve near-lossless quality? Is using remux'd files necessary? I've seen recurring themes on r/hometheater about how you're missing out on so much if you're streaming and not using BD or remux. I would like to build a server with ~50 TB of RAID storage to handle this with whatever CPU/GPU hardware I need to achieve this goal. I've been lurking in r/plex, r/hometheater, and r/homelab for a while, and I am looking for advice and resource recommendations on building a Plex setup that will give me 4k, HDR, super-saiyan, lossless or near-loss quality streams, possibly with the option to transcode down for remote users.
